ScienceX is an engineer-led specialist in Japan's grid-scale storage — sourcing, structuring and operating confirmed projects. Founded and led by Dr. Shinya Nakashima (PhD, Engineering); its board includes Toshio Oi (former Director of Showa Denko; CTO) and Yoshinaga Karasawa (former Representative Vice President of Teijin; CFO). We hold no capital ties to any battery manufacturer or EPC — so there is no vendor conflict of interest in equipment selection or cost structure.
Grid-scale battery storage is, at its core, a discipline of measurement and control.
Dr. Shinya Nakashima, ScienceX's Representative Director, began his career in 1990 as a researcher at a pharmaceutical company, working in drug quality control and regulatory submissions to Japan's health ministry. In 1993 he joined Nishikawa Keisoku Co., Ltd. — a specialist trading firm and distributor for Yokogawa Electric and Hewlett-Packard, covering measurement instruments, analytical equipment and plant control systems — where he spent 27 years developing chemical analysis systems and LIMS (laboratory information management systems) and designing GC/MS solutions for residual-pesticide and environmental-contaminant analysis. In all, he spent three decades on the front lines of the technologies that measure, analyze and control.
While still at Nishikawa Keisoku, he pursued doctoral research at the Prefectural University of Kumamoto, earning his PhD in Engineering (environmental and energy engineering) in 2015. His research on carbon-neutral fuels through biomass conversion and torrefaction later became the technical foundation of ScienceX. Alongside academic publications and patents, he served for five years from 2021 as a lecturer in chemistry at Tokyo Kasei University, teaching general and organic chemistry. That classroom experience — making difficult technology clear to non-specialists — carries directly into how he explains battery storage projects today.
In 2021 he founded ScienceX, where he first put his doctoral research to work — developing biogas systems now deployed at three sites across Japan. Today the company's focus is grid-scale battery storage. What determines a battery storage plant's quality and earning power is not the cells alone, but the measurement and control layer — the PCS and EMS. With an eye trained by 30 years in measurement and control, he sources, screens, structures and designs the operation of projects — including extra-high-voltage, 50 MW-class installations — with no capital ties to any particular manufacturer or EPC.
